NIMSB Director António Jacinto and Vice Director Sofia Miguel to attend Encontro Ciência 2024

The NOVA Institute for Medical Systems Biology (NIMSB) will be at Ciência 2024, with António Jacinto participating in a key plenary session about “Teaming for Excellence” projects in Portugal. Sofia Miguel will speak at a round table on Precision Medicine.

The director of the NOVA Institute for Medical Systems Biology (NIMSB), António Jacinto, will be present at Ciência 2024, participating in a plenary session titled “AS CORES DA VIDA + Teaming for Excellence” on 3rd July from 16:30 to 18:00 (WEST Time). The summit, held at the Alfândega do Porto Congress Centre, will focus on the theme of “+Science for Health and Global Wellbeing”.

This significant event, organised by the Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT), the University of Porto, and Ciência Viva, is the most prominent annual gathering dedicated to science in Portugal. It aims to foster dialogue, knowledge exchange, and collaboration among the scientific community.

António Jacinto will join esteemed colleagues Nuno Ferrand (BIOPOLIS), Fausto Lopo de Carvalho (IMM), Manuel dos Santos (MIA Portugal – Multidisciplinary Institute of Ageing), and Luís Pereira de Almeida (GENE T) in discussing the progress and impact of existing “Teaming for Excellence” projects in Portugal. These projects exemplify collaborative efforts aimed at advancing scientific excellence and innovation.

Sofia Miguel, NIMSB Vice Director, will also be present at the event. She will speak about Precision Medicine at a round table titled “Precision Medicine: Current Challenges and Future Directions“.

On the 5th of July, from 14:30 to 16:00 (WEST Time), this thematic session will explore the latest advancements, challenges, and future directions in this transformative approach to healthcare. The session will showcase examples of successful achievements in Precision Medicine, address the burden of chronic and infectious diseases through personalized interventions, and focus on the potential of this area to shift healthcare from a reactive to a proactive model, emphasizing early detection and prevention of diseases.

Sofia Miguel will be joined in the round table by Roberto Roncon from Universidade do Porto, who will deliver the initial intervention, and moderated by Paulo Pereira from NOVA University Lisbon. Other speakers include Luís Pereira Almeida and Irina Sousa Moreira from CNC, Universidade de Coimbra, and Pedro Matos Pereira from ITQB NOVA.

Under this year’s motto, “+Science for Health and Global Wellbeing”, the summit will delve into crucial topics such as Precision Medicine, Digital Health, Artificial Intelligence, and Health Education. The sessions will highlight the role of science in improving health and well-being from a global perspective.

During 3 days, the summit will feature contributions from renowned scientists, professors, medical professionals, and policymakers, who will explore how integrated scientific efforts can drive health advancements and sustainable development. The event will also feature a Science and Technology Exhibition, where it will be possible to learn more about the work carried out by our scientific and technological community.
